Die News-Welle aus dem Star-Wars-Universum reißt nicht ab, doch die aktuelle Meldung betrifft ausnahmsweise nicht Star Wars: Episode VII, sondern den ersten der mindestens drei geplanten Spin-Off-Filme. Dieser hat jetzt einen Regisseur gefunden – Gareth Edwards, dessen Godzilla-Neuinterpretation aktuell im Kino große Erfolge feiert. Das gab Lucasfilm heute in der Pressemitteilung bekannt, die Ihr unten in englischer Sprache nachlesen könnt.
Edwards gelangen innerhalb von nur drei Filmen unglaubliche Karrieresprünge. Noch 2010 inszenierte für weniger als $1 Mio seinen ersten Film Monsters und bereits sein zweiter Film, Godzilla, trug das 200-fache von Monsters' Budget und brachte Edwards weltweite Anerkennung als die neue große Hoffnung des Blockbuster-Kinos ein. Schon darf er sich demnächst im Star-Wars-Universum austoben – wahrscheinlich der Traum vieler Regisseure des Popcorn-Kinos. Edwards bleibt auch zugleich für Godzilla 2 verpflichtet, der sich bereits in Entwicklung befindet. Ich frage mich, welche Auswirkungen das Star-Wars-Spin-Off auf Godzilla 2 haben wird. Schließlich sind es beide aufwändige und zeitintensive Projekte. Warner Bros. bestätigte jedoch, dass Edwards weiterhin an Bord von Godzilla 2 bleibt und es immer der Plan gewesen sei, dass er zwischen dem ersten und dem zweiten Godzlla einen anderen Film drehen würde. The Hollywood Reporter berichtet sogar, dass Edwards sich für eine ganze Godzilla-Trilogie verpflichtet hat!
Unbekannt bleibt vorerst, worum es in dem Spin-off gehen wird. Es wird jedoch stark vermutet, dass der erste Ableger aus dem "Hauptuniversum" vom Kopfgeldjäger Boba Fett handeln wird. Disneys Plan ist es, jedes Jahr einen neuen Star-Wars-Film in die Kinos zu bringen. Für 2015, 2017 und 2019 sind angeblich Episoden VII-IX vorgesehen, während in den runden Jahren die Spin-Offs starten sollen. Edwards Film soll am 16.12.2016 in die US-Kinos kommen, ein Jahr nach Episode VII. Jedoch ist für das Datum aktuell auch James Camerons Avatar 2 vorgesehen und sollte das Sequel seinen Zeitplan einhalten, wird der Star-Wars-Film dem wohl weichen müssen

In addition to the episodes of a new "Star Wars" trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.
Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on "Monsters," a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in "Monsters" earned him the high-profile spot directing this year’s smash hit "Godzilla".
"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm, said Edwards.
Gary Whitta’s screenwriting credits include 2010s "The Book of Eli" starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of "The Walking Dead".
Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, "Star Wars" has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself."
